WHAT IS THE SBA HUBZONE PROGRAM?


The SBA’s Historically Underutilized Business Zones (HUBZone) program helps small businesses in urban and rural communities gain preferential access to federal procurement opportunities. As a means to help spur economic growth for firms residing in one of these economically depressed areas as defined by the US Census, the federal government sets-aside 3% of its annual budget to be awarded to Hubzone certified companies.


BENEFITS OF THE HUBZONE PROGRAM

The following are a list of potential benefits regarding being certified as a Hubzone firm:
  • Eligibility to compete for Hubzone set-aside opportunities issued by the Federal Gov’t
  • Eligibility to receive sole source awards as a Hubzone firm in specific instances.
  • Eligibility to receive a 10% price evaluation preference in certain circumstances

HUBZONE CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Below is a brief list of the of the eligibility requirements to enter into the Hubzone Program:
  • Must be a small business by SBA standards
  • Must be owned and controlled at least 51% by U.S. citizens
  • Principal office must be located within a “Historically Underutilized Business Zone.
  • At least 35% of its employees must reside in a HUBZone (An “employee” is any full time or part time member of your company that works a minimum of 40 hours a month).
